Wonderful Christ of Christmas
By Capazin Thornton
For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.—Isa 9:6 (NKJV)
Over 2000 years ago, a child was born. A Son was given, to us and for us—for our benefit. No ordinary child, no ordinary birth. Miraculously conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, He was born through the womb of the Virgin Mary. He is the eternal Word of God who became flesh and dwelt among us.
His name, “Wonderful”
His name is called wonderful. In modern vernacular: awesome, amazing, miraculous, phenomenal, amazing, excellent, magnificent, marvelous, outstanding, sensational, tremendous, magnificent, wondrous, terrific, very cool.
Through the Holy Scriptures, we see this child develops and becomes most wonderful in wisdom, character, word, and mighty deeds.
The Son of God
Christ of Eternity, the Son of God, took upon Himself flesh and became Jesus of Nazareth, the visible expression of the invisible God. The glory of the Lord revealed, the brightness (outshining) of God’s glory and the express image of His person. Grace and truth told out.
He came from Heaven to earth:
- to share our human nature in order that He might be a merciful and faithful high priest easily touched with the feelings of our infirmities and weaknesses;
- to die on the cross to pay the price for our sins (He was sinless);
- to restore us to right relationship with God;
- to set us free from the works of the devil;
- to give us eternal life;
- to give us a more abundant life on earth;
- to give us authority in His name over all the works of darkness.
Now resurrected, ascended, and seated at the right hand of God the Father in Heaven, Christ has been given all authority in Heaven and earth. He is forever the glorious, most wonderful God-man. Those who love Him look forward to His appearing one day in all His splendor and glory, as King of kings and Lord of lords!
Jesus Christ is indeed exceedingly wonderful! He gives us a clear picture of what the invisible God is like. Jesus Christ, the ultimate expression of the wisdom, righteousness, character, light, life, love, power, grace, and glory of God. He is God’s ultimate gift to humanity. To as many as receive Him, He gives the right to become children of God—to all who believe in His wonderful name.
