Revelation of True Worship
“God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” ~John 4:24
The revelation of true worship is one of the most profound revelations in the Bible. Yet, God did not reveal it to Moses or one of the other prophets. Nor did Jesus speak it to His disciples. This light for the ages, this divine truth, was spoken to a woman who was half Jew and half Samaritan.
This woman from Samaria came to Jacob’s well in Sychar to get a bucket of water. And there, sitting at the well in the heat of the day, was Jesus the Messiah. His presence there was not a coincidence but intentional. Tired and weary from his journey, Jesus began a dialogue with the woman when He asked her to give Him a drink of water.
From there, He proceeded to reveal spiritual truth. Jesus Himself is the Living Water. Those who receive Him will experience a spiritual transformation and never thirst again.
Finally, the Samaritan woman said to Him, “Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship” (John 4:20). The Samaritan people believed they should worship God on Mount Gerizim in Samaria. In contrast, the Jews believed the temple on Mount Moriah in Jerusalem was where God’s people should worship Him.
The Revelation of True Worship debunks religious notions.
Jesus gives this woman the revelation of true worship. He said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem worship the Father . . . But the hour is coming, and now is when the true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:21, 23, 24).
Here, Jesus debunks religion. One doesn’t have to go to a mountain or any place to worship God. The revelation of true worship says God is Spirit—infinite and omnipresent. Because God is Spirit, we must worship Him in spirit and truth.
The first step to worship God in spirit and truth is to receive a new spirit.
True Worship is out from one’s spirit
The revelation of true worship requires that we worship God out of our spirit. God gives us a new spirit when we receive Christ into our hearts. This regenerated spirit allows us to commune with God. Our new spirit is the secret place where we worship God and express true spirituality.
As a born-again child of God, we are mobile temples of God with continual access to God through the Spirit.
The revelation of true worship is exhilarating and freeing. We can worship God anywhere, anytime. Because the Holy Spirit dwells in us, we can kneel, sit, stand, lie down, walk, or even run while praying, praising, and thanking God from our hearts. And we have liberty of expression in the spirit, for “where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty” (2 Cor 3:17).
The Holy Spirit helps us worship God.
The Holy Spirit is God in us and will lead and guide us into all truth from the divine perspective. He will help us have intimacy with the Father. The Holy Spirit will make Jesus Christ gloriously real in our lives. He delights in helping us worship God every day, fully, freely, in spirit and truth.
