Pray for Leaders in Government

In my humble opinion, too many of God’s people are focused on the wrong stuff. On any given day, I receive emails with articles of gloom and doom for America, exposés on fallen church leaders, hatred for renegade leaders in government, etc. Listen, everybody knows the devil is busy. Frankly, I don’t care what the devil is doing. I want to know, what is God doing?

Whose choir are we in anyway? As people of faith and oracles of God, we should never align ourselves with voices that speak fear, hate, doubt and unbelief. Instead, we should permeate the atmospheric heavens with our praise and declare the Word of God to break through spiritual climates and advance the kingdom of God.

Exhortation to Pray for Leaders in Government

1 Tim 2:1-2 exhorts us to make prayer a priority. Of note, when the apostle Paul wrote these words, the tyrannical and maniacal Nero was emperor of Rome. Yet, the Holy Spirit said through Paul, that supplications, prayers, intercessions and giving of thanks are to be made for all men.

Let us pray for leaders in government. Here’s a sample prayer.

Leaders in Government

Father, your Word says the king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord and like the rivers of water you turn it wherever you wish. We ask you to turn the hearts of government leaders in our nation to the Lord. (Prov 21:1)

Father, we pray for the Holy Spirit to rest upon the leaders in our nation and make them of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord. (Isa 11:2; Prov 1:7)

We pray for the leaders in our nation to recognize that they have no authority apart from what is allowed by God. May they realize that the Most High God rules in the kingdom of men and gives it to whomever He desires. May they come to know that the true government is upon the Lord’s shoulders. (Dan 4:25; Isa 9:6)

We pray for blinders to be taken off their eyes, for the light of the glorious gospel to shine upon their hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. We pray for the Holy Spirit to convince them of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment. (2 Cor 4:4; Jn 16:8)

Lord, surround them with godly counselors who are full of integrity and wisdom from above. (Prov 11:14; Jas 3:17)

Father, we pray for wisdom to enter their hearts, for knowledge of the Lord to be pleasant to their souls, for discretion to preserve them, and for understanding to keep them, to deliver them from the way of evil, from people who speak perverse things. (Prov 2:10-12)

We pray for the upright and blameless to dwell and remain in government offices, and for the unfaithful to be uprooted from them. For when the righteous are in authority the people rejoice and not groan. (Prov 2:21-22; 20:26; 29:2)

Father, may your mercy and truth preserve the leaders in our nation and may they uphold their office by loving kindness. We pray for them to lift up a standard of what is right and just. (Prov 20:28; Isa 62:10)

We pray these leaders will put their trust in Almighty God and not in military power and weapons; that they will fear God and not fear mere men. (Ps 46:1-3; Ps 27)

Father, we pray that the leaders in our nation will be filled with the knowledge of God’s will with all wisdom and spiritual understanding. We ask these things in the wonderful Name of Jesus Christ, Lord of all. (Col 1:9)
