Rest means to cease from work, to repose. In Christ, we have permanent spiritual rest. We enter this rest when we unite our faith with God’s amazing and powerful promises.

The Promise of Rest

God promised the children of Israel the land of Canaan. Hebrew 4:2 says the Word did not profit them because it was not mixed with faith. The older generation died in the wilderness without entering the Promise Land or the promised rest.

We who are in Christ can rest in four dynamic truths:

  1. Christ paid the full price for our salvation.
  2. We have eternal life.
  3. The Holy Spirit dwells within.
  4. God’s Word, full of amazing and powerful promises, is eternal.

The Power of God’s Word to Work

Hebrews 4:12 says God’s Word is living and powerful. The Greek word translated powerful is energes (en-er-gace’) from which we get energetic. It means at work, active, operative, effective, effectual.

EVERY WORD OF GOD…WORKS! And every Word spoken by God is FOREVER!

God spoke the universe into existence. When God said, “Light be,” light came forth.  Light still obeys God’s voice. God still upholds the universe by the word [command] of His power. “For He spoke, and it was; he commanded and it stood fast…”—Ps 33:6

What God speaks is never canceled or annulled. Empowered by the life and breath of God, every Word of God will accomplish His purpose and prosper where it is sent.

We enter into rest when we rest in God’s eternal Word.

How to Rest in God’s Amazing and Powerful Promises

Suppose you have prayed and asked God to open a door of financial opportunity. You are diligent. You check the ads every day. You send out resumes. But weeks and then months go by without one response. Your bills are mounting up. An oppressive atmosphere starts to set in.

What do you do? Rest! Nothing has changed. God is still able to make all grace abound to you so that you have all sufficiency in all things—just as He said. You will receive the end of your faith—fulfillment of God’s promise—if you don’t give up. Remember, God’s Word works. Rest in it.

In summary:

  • Realize God’s work concerning you was finished before the foundation of the world.
  • Unite your faith with God’s promises in the Scriptures.
  • Enter into the rest God’s promises provide.
  • Hold on tight to your bold confession of faith and wait confidently and expectantly for the fulfillment of God’s promise.
  • Cast down any thought that opposes God’s amazing and powerful promises.
