How to Have a Winning Mindset
What if you could have a mindset that assures victory in every battle? You can. Let’s look at the story of David and Goliath to see how.
Goliath the Intimidator
Goliath of Gath was very self-confident. After all, at nearly 10 feet tall and covered with 100+ pounds of armor, he looked like the Terminator on steroids. And he had a reputation as the Philistines’ undefeated champion.
Wars in those days were sometimes negotiated rather than fought. Each side could choose their best fighter to engage in a single battle. The loser’s people would serve the winner.
So, every day for 40 days, Goliath came out and shouted a challenge to Saul’s army:
This day I dare the soldiers of Israel to send a man down to fight against me. (1 Sam 17:10, NIRV)
Goliath’s intimidation and seeming invincibility left Saul and his army disheartened and very afraid.
David’s Mindset
Enter David, a teenager who tended his father Jesse’s sheep. His three oldest brothers were in King Saul’s army. One day Jesse told David to take the boys some corn nuts, cheese, and bread and bring back word how they were doing.
Early the next day, David left the sheep with a watchman and took the provisions to the supply keeper in Saul’s camp. Then he ran and found his brothers. As they were talking, Goliath came forth from the Philistine camp. And David heard him talking trash.
Some of Saul’s soldiers told David the king would greatly enrich the man who kills Goliath, give that man his daughter to marry, and exempt his father’s house from paying any more taxes.
David had a mindset to fight and win
David perked up his ears. Word got to King Saul, and David went before him. David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail. I will go and fight this Philistine” (1 Sam 17:31).
Saul said no because David was just a lad, not a man of war. But David told the king he killed a lion and a bear who tried to take one of his father’s sheep. And, likewise, he would kill this heathen who defied the armies of the living God. Because the same God who delivered David from the lion and bear was with him to assure victory in this battle. (1 Sam 17:34-37)
David had a God-infused mindset and heart of faith. He faced Goliath, and boldly proclaimed:
You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel’s armies, whom you have defied.
This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you. And this day I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
Then all this assembly shall know that the LORD does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the LORD’s, and He will give you into our hands.
Then David ran to meet Goliath. He made a slingshot with one rock, slung it, and struck Goliath in the forehead. The arrogant giant was dead. David then cut off his head.
Three Winning Mindsets
To win life’s battles, you need God-infused mindsets. Here are three of the best:
God is Greater Mindset
God is greater than anything.
Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, the power and the glory, the victory and the majesty; for all that is in heaven and in earth is Yours; Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and You are exalted as head over all. (1 Chron 29:11)
With God, All Things are Possible!
Jesus looked at them and said, “With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible.” (Mark 10:27)
Walk by Faith, Not by Sight Mindset
To walk by faith means to trust God with all your heart and live according to the invisible reality of things, not by sight — the visible appearance of things.
Things that are seen don’t last forever, but things that are not seen are eternal. That’s why we keep our minds on the things that cannot be seen. (2 Cor 4:18, CEV)
If you renew your mind to establish strong mindsets like these, you will have victory in and through life’s battles.
