Truth

Some Things Spit in Truth’s Face

My high school French teacher said something that shaped my worldview for many years: “Believe none of what you hear and half of what you see.”

Naturally speaking, that worked well for me until I discovered Adobe Photoshop. With Photoshop’s tools, I could transform an imperfect photo into a work of art (subjectively speaking). I could move things around, change colors, camouflage, blur, and erase. What glee!

Graphic artists shade the truth all the time to create fabulous looking glossy magazine covers with stunningly beautiful models. Inside the magazines are promises of beauty, health, happiness, and near physical perfection in a bottle, tube, jar, injection, pill, or formula.

Hoodwinked, bamboozled, deceived, or just plain vain, covetous and stupid, we spend thousands of dollars purchasing magazines and products that provide dubious results for us but billions in profits for the magazine and cosmetic industry.

Undoubtedly, today’s world is full of deception, illusion, hidden agendas, greedy people, situational ethics, and ever-changing social mores that continually spit in the truth’s face.

What is truth?

  1. that which is genuine, real, authentic, ultimate, and absolute;
  2. God’s Word;
  3. Jesus Christ;
  4. every spiritual reality resulting from Jesus’ death on the cross, burial, resurrection, and ascension back to Heaven;
  5. The eternal, omniscient Holy Spirit.

How should we respond?

The first response to truth from God is to receive it by faith. Then, as recipients of truth, we must be honest. Sincere people “practice no deceit, and attempt no disguises.” We are not perfect, but, with the Holy Spirit’s help, we can become better each day.

Truth is essential to a victorious life

Without truth, we:

  • are vulnerable to spiritual attack.
  • fail to discern what we see and hear.
  • cannot fully worship God.

So, become established in truth. The truth we know and operate in will make us free. And integrity of heart will keep us free.
