See, Hear, Smell, Taste, Touch Good Things from God

Sometimes we concentrate so much on walking by faith that we fail to appreciate the good things we can see, hear, smell, taste and touch.

See the Good Things of God

Every day we get to see the exquisite colors of the rainbow—sometimes in the sky, but always in people, in food, in flowers, in birds, in butterflies, in the fish of the sea.

These last couple of weeks in southern California have been unseasonably warm—temperatures in the mid 80’s. I love the light and warmth of the sun. I like going to the beach to see the sun rise or set.

Hear the Sounds

I love to hear the sounds of ocean, with waves rolling in and out from shore. Speaking of sounds, the Bible says even inanimate things produce a sound. (1 Cor 14:7). The fact is the whole universe is one great symphony.

Love the sound of birds chirping, bees humming, roosters crowing, horses neighing, cats meowing, and little dogs barking like they really are somebody. Love to hear the roar of thunder, usually followed by a downpour of rain.

Smell the Good Things of God

Love the rain—to smell it, to play in it. Lord, we need more rain! Love the smell of an infinite variety of flowers in the spring, especially roses, and clusters of gardenias in the summer.

Taste the treats

Fruits and vegetables

Love fruits and vegetables. The crispy crunch and sweet-tart taste of a good apple. Fuji, Honey Crisp, and Granny Smith are my faves. Love Bing cherries. What about those navel oranges bursting with tangy juice that splashes all over your face when you bite into one? I feel a praise coming on.

Just the touch of a little hand

A real WOW for me is looking into the innocent face of a child. Love it when they put their little hands in yours, or their little arms around your neck, or touch your face while looking into your eyes and simultaneously drooling down your neck.

Just a few of the simple, precious, awe inspiring and praise provoking blessings God gives us every day.

God is the One who blesses us to see, hear,  smell, taste, touch

Unfortunately, there are people who give God little thought, even though He is the one who graces them every day with the breath of life. Even though He is the one who blesses them to see, hear, smell, taste, and touch the wonders of His creation.

In Hell there are no good things to see, hear, smell, taste, touch

This leads me to a few thoughts about “Hell.” Many people believe that Hell is simply an urban legend. However, the Bible makes it clear that Hell is a real place. Its duration is eternal. Its destination is sure—for those who do not know God, for those who refuse to receive His gift of salvation.

You might wonder, “Why does Hell exist?” Hell was originally prepared for the devil and his angels. These angels rebelled against God. They were created by God to live forever. They cannot die. And they want nothing to do with God. So God prepared a place for them far away from Himself—forever!

Think about it. Would you want to spend eternity with beings that hate you and want nothing to do with you? Of course not.

So God prepared a place for them where His presence is totally absent. There is nothing good in Hell because God who is Good is absent. It is pitch black in Hell because God who is Light is absent. Hell is filled with hate because God who is Love is absent. Hell forever lacks any of the good things we see, hear, smell, taste, and touch.

Taste and See that the Lord is Good

On the other hand, God has prepared a wonderful place with tremendous, super amazing, superabundant blessings for those who love Him. He promises, “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” (1 Cor 2:9)

If you want to spend eternity with God, simply receive His gift of salvation. (1) Turn from your sins to God. (2) Ask Him to forgive you. (3) Believe that Jesus Christ paid the price for your sins. (4) Confess Jesus as the Lord of your life.  (5) You shall be saved. (Rom 10:9-10)

Now, if you have taken these steps, naturally and spiritually, you will be able to perpetually taste and see the goodness of the Lord. (Ps 34:8)

      1. Lauren, thank you for your comment. If anyone loves and cares for the lives of others, it is you. Your children and all the children you nurture surely rise up everyday and call you “blessed.” Capazin
