Prophecy

True Spirit infused prophecy synchs our hearts with God’s.

A couple of decades ago it was fairly common for believers to stand up in a church service and prophesy. Most times, an edifying, comforting, and encouraging word was spoken.

Less often, but more desired, were the times when someone stood up to prophesy and…BOOM! Suddenly there was a rumbling in the spirit, a spiritual earthquake, if you will. Similar to Acts 2:2, when suddenly a sound came from heaven like a mighty rushing wind!

I have been in church services and meetings where after dynamic heart-felt worship prophecy poured forth so powerfully that God’s sweet presence filled the room like a thick cloud. People stood in awe. Some got on their knees. Others lay prostrate in His presence. These were amazing life-changing moments that encouraged and strengthened the church.

Four Ways Prophecy is Expressed

While many people think of prophecy in terms of fore-telling the future (predictive prophecy makes up about one-third of Scripture), prophecy essentially and primarily is telling forth the mind, heart, and will of God.

In the New Testament prophecy is expressed four ways:

  1. Through the office and ministry of a prophet. (Eph 4:11; 1 Cor 12:28)
  2. Through one possessing a gift of prophecy. (Rom 12:6)
  3. Through any believer. (Joel 2:28; Rev 19:10)
  4. Through the manifestation of the Holy Spirit. (1 Cor 12:10)

Prophecy as a Manifestation of the Holy Spirit

This kind of prophecy does not originate in one’s mind. It is supernaturally prompted and inspired by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit moves on people He chooses at times He chooses to tell forth the message God wants spoken at that time.

What results is the spontaneous bubbling up and pouring forth of a divinely inspired communication that clearly expresses God’s heart, mind and will at a given moment.

It is as though God, watching and listening, interrupts the service to give us His real time perspective!

I have experienced this many times. While teaching sometimes from a prepared outline, suddenly, the Holy Spirit prompts me to make a shift and speak forth the now Word of the Lord. This also happens when I pray for people. God will shift the focus from praying for people to speaking powerfully into their lives.

Prophecy that Synchs our Hearts with God’s

All true prophecy spoken under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit will:

  • Agree with Scripture (the more sure prophetic word)
  • Glorify the Lord Jesus Christ
  • Be liberating and transformational
  • Draw people closer to God
  • Lift up, build up, and stir up the hearers.

When God shows up through Holy Spirit inspired prophecy, we are ushered into a fresh alignment with His heart and purpose. Our focus becomes clear. We are moved to change. Our faith is ignited. We are enthused about advancing the kingdom of God.
