“I will give you the treasures of darkness and hidden riches of secret places that you may know that I, the LORD, who call you by your name, am the God of Israel.”—Isaiah 45:3

In this passage God was speaking to King Cyrus of Persia. God called King Cyrus to deliver the Jews out of Babylonian captivity and to restore them to their homeland. God promised the Persian king that He would give him treasures hidden in secret or dark places. God’s WORD Translation says “treasures from dark places and hidden stockpiles.”

Babylon was rich in treasures including spoils seized from the nations it had conquered. (Jer 51:13) The king of Babylon may have hidden his immense wealth in caves. Perhaps he had buried it underground or in the sea. God promised to give these hidden treasures to King Cyrus. Here we see God fulfilling his promise to bless those who bless Israel. (Gen 12:3)

Spiritually speaking, there are no greater treasures to God than people. Christ Jesus paid the price to redeem every man, woman and child off the slave market of sin. Christ believers must pray for spiritual blinders to come off people’s eyes so they may receive God’s gift of salvation.

Those who receive Christ into their hearts are instantly spiritually regenerated by the power of the Holy Spirit. They are delivered by God out of the kingdom of darkness and conveyed into the kingdom of the Son of His love. (Col 1:13)

As we continue praying for these new converts, they will grow in grace and the knowledge of Christ (2 Pet 3:18). They will discover their unique gifts, talents, purpose, and potential in Christ. They will come to know experientially the glorious loving and benevolent God who rescued them out of dark places, blessed them to be a blessing, and keeps them as treasures to Himself throughout eternity.

“Oh that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men!” —Ps 107:8
