For the most part we should forget things past (Phil 3:13). However, there are some things the Bible tells us to always remember. Together these points of reference paint a picture of God’s super amazing love, grace, and provision for us.
1. The day you were brought out of bondage
God delivered the children of Israel out bondage in Egypt after 400 years of slavery. (Ex 13:3) For believers today, Egypt symbolizes sin and spiritual bondage. God wants us to remember the day He delivered us with a mighty hand from the clutches of sin and spiritual bondage.
Rather than focusing on the sinful things we did while in Egypt, we should praise the awesome God who rescued and delivered us out of the dominion of sin and bondage. While we should not forget the fact that we once were once sinners serving the devil, we should much more remember the day God delivered us from the power of the devil and translated us into the kingdom of His Dear Son. (Col 1:13)
2. That God gives you the power to get wealth
You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today. (Deut 8:17-18, NIV)
We must never forget that it is God who gives us the power, strength, skill and wisdom to get wealth. By doing so, He confirms His covenant with us—a covenant of blessings based on superlative promises. Whether blessed with material goods or spiritual knowledge, always remember that God is your source. Also remember that He blesses us so that we may bless others.
3. To trust in the Lord
Remember not to trust in chariots or horses, but always remember the Name of the Lord. (Ps 20:7)
There are many modern day chariots (technology, weapons, government) that people trust in to provide protection and security. God wants us to remember to trust in the Name of the Lord, the most exalted name in the universe. (Phil 2:9) “The Name of the Lord is a strong tower. The righteous run to it, and they are safe.” (Prov 18:10)
